V dňoch 29. – 30. júna 2026 sa v lotyšskej Rige uskutočňuje medzinárodná konferencia Learning from the Past: Latvian Museum Heritage Trafficking in World War II and its Aftermaths, ktorú organizuje Lotyšský národný výbor ICOM. Podujatie predstavuje lotyšský príspevok k medzinárodnému projektu PRISM, financovanému Európskou úniou a koordinovanému Medzinárodnou radou múzeí (ICOM).

Konferencia sa zameriava na problematiku nezákonného premiestňovania a rabovania múzejných zbierok počas druhej svetovej vojny a na dôsledky, ktoré tieto udalosti zanechali dodnes. Predstavuje výsledky výskumu realizovaného v rámci projektu PRISM, ktorý sa venuje histórii lotyšských múzeí a presunom kultúrneho dedičstva počas vojny i v povojnovom období.

Odborníci z oblasti múzejníctva, histórie, práva a ochrany kultúrneho dedičstva diskutujú o osudoch zbierkových predmetov počas vojnových konfliktov, o význame provenienčného výskumu, možnostiach reštitúcie kultúrnych hodnôt, ale aj o úlohe múzeí pri ochrane kultúrneho dedičstva pred nelegálnym obchodovaním. Svoje poznatky a výsledky výskumu prezentujú aj experti z Litvy, Estónska, Francúzska a Belgicka.

Program konferencie prepája historický pohľad na udalosti druhej svetovej vojny so súčasnými výzvami, ktorým čelia múzeá v období ozbrojených konfliktov a rastúceho nelegálneho obchodu s kultúrnymi predmetmi. Diskusie zároveň poukazujú na význam medzinárodnej spolupráce, zdieľania skúseností a spoločných postupov pri ochrane kultúrneho dedičstva.

Podujatie je súčasťou medzinárodného projektu PRISM (Preventing and Responding to Illicit Trafficking through the Strengthening of Security in Museums), ktorého cieľom je posilniť pripravenosť múzeí na prevenciu a riešenie nezákonného obchodovania s kultúrnymi predmetmi prostredníctvom výskumu, vzdelávania a medzinárodnej spolupráce.

Konferencia v Rige pripomína, že poznanie minulosti je nevyhnutným predpokladom pre ochranu kultúrneho dedičstva v súčasnosti. Skúsenosti z obdobia druhej svetovej vojny poskytujú dôležité poučenia pre dnešné múzeá a ich úsilie chrániť zbierky pred stratou, poškodením či nelegálnym obchodovaním.
