The awards recognise outstanding achievements in the protection, preservation, research, and promotion of cultural heritage, covering a wide range of categories and types of projects – from tangible to intangible heritage.

These awards were initiated by the European Commission in 2002 and have been organized by Europa Nostra since then. The European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards are supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
